Collection: Marta Marugán
Exclusive Collection at La Rubia Ferlandina 29, Barcelona
When an anonymous person put into Mafalda's mouth that “stop the world because I'm getting off”, the Basque artist based in Barcelona, Marta Marugán (San Sebastián 1964), took advantage of the confusion to get out. And while Quino , Mafalda's father, tried to explain that the most famous phrase attributed to his character was not his, Marta Marugán dedicated herself to observing, to later paint and discover to the rest of the world those things that, because of the rush, we go unnoticed. Quino claimed that "Mafalda does not want to get out of the world, because she wants the world to improve." But Marta Marugán has shown that stopping, in order to contemplate, facilitates reflection and those reflections that she brings to life with drawings and paint invite us to think and act.
His work, full of colour, movement and curves, is full of symbology. And in some pieces he discovers dreamlike interior landscapes. “I have always painted. Painting, drawing, stamping, in short, creating, has conditioned my way of understanding the world; my sensitivity and my decisions”, he says. “As a child I discovered that painting is a magical act. And also a powerful tool with which I can unite my inner world with the outside and tell stories of these two universes. It's something I'm passionate about," he confesses. So much so, that in her facet as a teacher -she collaborates with the prestigious Massana School in Barcelona-, she has developed a personal method that she calls "Drawing to see".
Like his work, his exhibition with TheClubArt has a lot of symbology. He has chosen a dozen canvases that he painted thirty years ago because when he created them he frequented the place that exhibits them today. “I was going to have fun and listen to poetry. Today the place is still open, it is called La Rubia. I am here too and those paintings are still with me. There is a meeting of the three and I like this ”, he explains.
Although now his work breathes differently, it was magical to choose those pieces. Marta Marugán has a fruitful career. He studied Fine Arts in Barcelona and Deusto, and graduated in engraving, a technique that he improved in Florence. Between 1992 and 2002 he lived in Paris. In addition to the Basel and Arco Fair, he has exhibited in Naples, Milan, Porto and Seattle. Now, he lives in Barcelona, where he combines creation with teaching. In his latest exhibition he has recovered work from the first time he lived in Barcelona.
